Rainbow Anthracite from McAdoo, Pennsylvania. An intriguing and colorful metallic rainbow iridescence is present across some of the surface of this hard variety of coal. I don't have a definitive answer on what causes the color - it's still a bit of a mystery, so let me know if you know. The supplier who collected the material said that it was likely the presence of copper during the formation of the coal. But I spoke with a coal miner who said that he didn't think there would be copper in the coal deposit. So the verdict is still out. None-the-less, I thought this was a pretty piece!
